Story within a Story

The other day I picked up Donald Miller's A Thousand Miles In A Million Years.
This was my first book by him and I wanted to share some thoughts.

One part that struck me was this idea of "living out our story" and "what story are we writing for our lives". He gave a great example of a Dad who was disheartened with his daughter's choice of boyfriend and the pot he found in her room. He didn't know what to do. Then this idea that came that he needed to help "re-write his daughter's story" for her to live out. He found a project in Mexico where some people were needing $25, 000 to build an orphanage. Even though he couldn't personally afford to finance it, he committed his family to this project and raising funds for these kids. At first his wife and daughter thought he was crazy, but after a few days had a change of heart. His daughter wanted to take a trip to Mexico as a family to meet the orphans and take pictures so that she could make a website and generate funds. They did. This was the turning point for his family. The daughter became a "hero" and found a self worth she didn't realize she had before. So this boyfriend no longer fit in her " life script" and he was gone, along with the negative influences he brought her. This family realized they had a story to play within God's BIGGER story of life around them.

Chris and I had a "Fake Valentines Day" dinner date on Monday and we talked about this idea of life story and BIGGER story. We then spent some time just imagining scenes we want to see for our scipt this year. IF we were going to create scenes for a movie, what would we like to see in 2010 documentary on our lives? It generated some good imagination and discussion. I like it when books do that. I plan to read some more Donald Miller just for that reason.

Met with the Realtor

We met with our realtor and put an offer on a condo yesterday. It's a short sale, so it takes 4-8 weeks to determine if they will even accept our offer. I am not sure the circumstances as to why it is a short sale- obviously it is not a good situation for the seller, but it ends up being a great deal for us. So, we will see what happens over the next few months and if it all pans out.

In the meantime... next item of discussion will be paint colors and a new kitchen table. Our current one is a glass top and is not kid friendly. I can feel the creative juices flowing already....

Candle in the Wind- Literally

My husband is a candle freak. Ambiance is super important to him, so whenever he sits down to read or joural he has a ritual of lighting a bunch of candles before sitting in the recliner to contemplate life.

Yesterday he had the candles burning and went I went into our room later I saw he forgot to blow one of the candles out. Not thinking, I reached over to grab the glass jar and blow the candle out.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! HOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was me- screaming and running to the kitchen to get an ice cube for my finger that was absolutely throbbing in pain from being burned. The jar was scorching hot and so immediately I flung the jar out of my hand and it splattered across our wall and carpet. (Did I mention it was one of those smelly candles that was RED?!?)

Chris was in the living room playing guitar and of course rushed to see what was wrong with me. Liliana was in the room with me when she saw Mommy get hurt. She ran with me to get ice and as soon as I put it on my finger she came over to me and said, "Need hug?" She put her arms around me and hugged mommy so I would feel better.
( so sweet and made me feel 1000% better)

I burned my finger right on my nerve ending, so I was in a ton of pain. We lathered some anitbotic cream on it and then Chris went to go clean up my mess. We looked online how to clean up wax stains. One person suggested a blow dryer. You melt the wax and then wipe it up. The blow dryer worked wonders! What was a splattered red wall looked great after Chris melted and wiped the wax. We were also able to clean up the carpet with no stain in sight.

I don't know what it is with me and burns. Last week I burned my arm taking cheesecakes out of the oven.

I'm just thankful that I am the one that found the candle and not Liliana. Also, I will remember next time never to touch a hot jar- duh.

My finger feels much better today- I am happy to say. :-)

Meet Clifford

Yesterday morning Clifford the Big Red Dog was at our local Barnes and Noble, so I surprised Liliana and took her up there for story time. She was so happy. She kept saying hi to him, waving and she was so excited to get to actually hug him.
Such fun!

Inspection

Today our house is getting an inspection because we have a CONTRACT!! FINALLY!!!

We have had our house on the market this second time for almost a year. We were so relieved last week when our realtor called with a contract.

When we first moved to Madison our shed caught on fire. We have amazing neighbors that took ont the project of clearing out all the burnt wood and reconstructing a new one. We also had lots of yard work and again, neighbors, friends and family have been so gracious to help with weeding, mowing, raking leaves, clearing gutters. But the thought of having to coordinate all of that again this spring was a bit depressing.

So, hopefully all goes well and we will close in a few weeks. All of our stuff will be in one state and we can start looking at getting a place in Madison and putting down some more roots here.

It may sound funny, but one of the main things I am looking forward to is having a place we can paint. I like having colors on our walls- it makes it cozy and feels more settled and like "home". We will probably get a simple condo here in Madison- something where we don't have to do a lot of yardwork and cleaning since life as parents and church planters is full. We aren't wanting too much domestic work in this season of life. But we do want a place we can paint! I'll be hitting the stores soon looking at paint swatches. Can't wait!
